When it comes to decreased sensitivity of the clitoris and irritation in the genital region, many women cite a large clitoral hood as the culprit. The condition of having a large clitoral hood can be present from birth but can also arise later in life as a result of pregnancy and childbirth. In either case, an enlarged clitoral hood can cause irritation against clothing and diminished sexual pleasure. This can take quite a toll on one’s confidence and self-esteem. Dr. Darren Lazare, MD, performs clitoral hood reduction in Vancouver, BC, for patients seeking to improve the appearance and comfort of their clitoral hood while also establishing improved confidence.

What Is Clitoral Hood Reduction?

A clitoral hood reduction is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to remove the excess skin of the clitoral hood. The clitoral hood is a skin fold that covers and protects the clitoris. During sexual arousal, the clitoris swells and pulls back the skin of the clitoral hood, making itself accessible for sexual pleasure. When the clitoral hood has excess skin, it cannot successfully be pushed out of the way by the clitoris. This leads to trouble achieving satisfactory sensation during intercourse and can even irritate due to increased friction against clothing.

Clitoral Hood Reduction Procedure

A clitoral hood reduction is performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning you can go home the same day as your surgery. This hour-long procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia, ensuring you do not feel a thing. In some cases, a clitoral hood reduction will be performed at the same time as an additional cosmetic procedure like labiaplasty. Your provider begins your surgery by trimming the excess skin from the clitoral hood, paying close attention to not disturbing the surrounding tissues or the nerves of the clitoris. When the procedure is complete, the incisions will be closed with dissolvable sutures.

Clitoral Hood Reduction Results and Recovery

Immediately following your clitoral hood reduction surgery, you can expect some mild swelling, bruising, and discomfort. You will be advised to take around a week off from work and any other strenuous activities during your initial recovery. To improve your recovery experience, you should wear loose-fitting undergarments and clothing, take pain relievers, use ice packs as needed, and avoid using tampons and having sex for at least six weeks after your procedure. The final results of a clitoral hood reduction will become visible after a few months.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

You Have Questions, We Have Answers.

Does a clitoral hood reduction increase sensitivity?

A clitoral hood reduction does not alter the sensitivity of the clitoris but rather allows for more of it to be exposed during sexual arousal. In turn, this leads to an increase in contact during intercourse and a higher chance of achieving orgasm.

How long does swelling last after a clitoral hood reduction?

Initial swelling and bruising can take a couple of weeks to go down. An additional 4-6 weeks are needed for all swelling to go down and for the final results to be noticeable.

Are there any risks associated with clitoral hood reduction?

Every surgical procedure carries the possibility of risks, and a clitoral hood reduction is not exempt from this. Possible but rare complications include nerve damage and infection.

What are the benefits of clitoral hood reduction?

Benefits of clitoral hood reduction include improved appearance of the genital area, increased access to the clitoris during sexual activities, and reduced irritation due to the clothing chafing against a large clitoral hood.

How do I reduce my clitoral hood?

Clitoral hood reduction lessens the size or prominence of the clitoral hood, the fold of skin that covers the clitoris, through surgery. Its typically performed for aesthetic or functional reasons, such as to improve comfort or sexual satisfaction.

What is the average cost of clitoral hood reduction?

The average cost of clitoral hood reduction can vary-- the procedure may range from a few thousand to several thousand dollars. Patients curious about pricing and payment plans can discuss so in their consultation.

Is clitoral hood reduction worth it?

A clitoral hood reduction is a highly personal decision that depends on individual preferences, concerns, and goals. Most people will find that reducing the size of the clitoral hood enhances their overall comfort.

What are the side effects of clitoral hood reduction?

Undergoing clitoral hood reduction carries certain risks such as bleeding, infection, scarring, changes in sensation, and dissatisfaction with the aesthetic outcome. However, a board-certified provider can greatly minimize these risks and promote healthy recovery.

What is the preferred age for clitoral hood reduction?

There isnt a specific preferred age-- some people may choose to undergo the procedure during their late teens or early adulthood, while others may wait until later in life. Regardless of age, every patient must undergo a consultation to understand their personalized plan.

What is clitoral hood reduction?

Clitoral hood reduction is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of excess skin from the clitoral hood—the fold of tissue that covers and protects the body and glans of the clitoris. Often performed alongside labiaplasty, the procedure aims to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the vulva while preserving proportionality and balance between its structures.

Why do people opt for clitoral hood reduction?

Patients often seek clitoral hood reduction to enhance sexual pleasure, alleviate discomfort, and enhance the appearance of the vulva. This procedure can address concerns related to excessive tissue that may hinder sexual enjoyment or cause physical discomfort.

How long does the procedure take?

Clitoral hood reduction typically takes about one hour to complete. The duration may vary slightly depending on individual factors and the specifics of the procedure.

What can be expected during recovery?

Recovery from clitoral hood reduction generally involves some discomfort and swelling. Following labiaplasty there will commonly be mild swelling and possibly bruising. Everyone’s recovery journey is slightly different but light activities of daily living may resume in 1 to 2 days. It is recommended that patients avoid strenuous activities, swimming, and sex for 4 to 6 weeks.. During recovery, it is important to use cold compresses, keep the area clean, and follow postoperative care instructions.

What are the risks involved?

Similar to any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with clitoral hood reduction. Serious risks are rare (less than 1%) and include infection, bleeding, blood transfusion, injury to nerves causing decreased sensation or pain, and pain with sex. These risks are minimized when your procedure is performed by a healthcare provider like Dr. Lazare who is subspecialty trained in female cosmetic and urogynecologic reconstructive surgery.

What is the recovery process like after a clitoral hood reduction?

Recovery after a clitoral hood reduction is usually gentle and manageable, though some swelling and tenderness in the area are completely normal. You’ll be encouraged to rest and give your body time to heal, avoiding strenuous activities and intimacy for about 4 to 6 weeks. Most women can ease back into light daily activities within a few days. Following your post-operative care instructions will help support a smooth, comfortable healing process.

How is a clitoral hood reduction performed?

A clitoral hood reduction is typically performed as a comfortable outpatient procedure under local anesthesia. Dr. Lazare gently removes any excess skin and carefully reshapes the area, helping to enhance both comfort and confidence while maintaining natural sensitivity. The procedure typically takes about 30 minutes and may be combined with other procedures, such as labiaplasty, for comprehensive results.

Will I need to take time off work after the procedure?

The amount of time off work needed after a clitoral hood reduction varies based on individual recovery and the nature of one’s job. Many patients can return to work within a few days if their job does not involve physical labor. However, those with physically demanding jobs may need to take more time off to ensure proper healing.

Can clitoral hood reduction be performed on its own?

Yes, clitoral hood reduction can be performed as a standalone procedure or in conjunction with other cosmetic vaginal surgeries, such as labiaplasty. Patients should discuss their goals and preferences with Dr. Lazare to determine the best approach for their individual needs.

What should I expect during my consultation for a clitoral hood reduction?

During your consultation for a clitoral hood reduction, the surgeon will take time to understand your medical history, listen to your personal reasons for considering the procedure, and gently assess your anatomy to ensure the approach best supports your comfort, confidence, and well-being. Dr. Lazare will explain the surgical process, potential risks, expected outcomes, and recovery timeline. This is also an opportunity for patients to ask questions and express any concerns they may have regarding the procedure.

Who Is a Candidate for Clitoral Hood Reduction?

The ideal candidate for a clitoral hood reduction is typically a woman who experiences discomfort, irritation, or self-consciousness due to an excessively large or protruding clitoral hood. This may interfere with sexual activity, hygiene, or aesthetic appearance. Candidates may feel that the excess tissue surrounding the clitoris obscures its sensitivity, impacting their sexual satisfaction and overall well-being. Ideal candidates for clitoral hood reduction are generally in good overall health, have realistic expectations about the outcomes of the procedure, and are motivated to address their concerns and improve their genital aesthetics and sexual function.
