Pelvic organ prolapse can be a highly distressing and uncomfortable condition affecting many women. This condition, where pelvic organs like the bladder, uterus, or rectum drop from their normal position, can lead to a range of uncomfortable symptoms. Dr. Darren Lazare is dedicated to offering comprehensive and effective treatments to patients in Vancouver to help them regain their quality of life and restore pelvic health.

What is Prolapse?

Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when the muscles and tissues supporting the pelvic organs weaken, causing one or more of the organs to descend into the vaginal canal. This can include the bladder (cystocele), uterus (uterine prolapse), rectum (rectocele), or the small bowel (enterocele). Symptoms of prolapse can vary but often include a feeling of heaviness or pressure in the pelvis, urinary or fecal incontinence, and difficulty with bowel movements. Prolapse is commonly associated with childbirth, aging, and conditions that increase pressure on the abdomen, such as chronic coughing or obesity.

WHAT DOES IT TREAT?

Prolapse can be treated using a variety of surgical techniques aimed at restoring the normal position of the pelvic organs and alleviating symptoms. The choice of treatment depends on the type and severity of prolapse, as well as the patient’s overall health and personal preferences.

Uterosacral Suspension

Uterosacral suspension is a surgical procedure used to correct uterine or vaginal vault prolapse. During this procedure, the uterosacral ligaments are used to lift and secure the prolapsed organs back into their proper position. This technique provides strong support and helps restore normal pelvic anatomy.

Sacrocolpopexy

Sacrocolpopexy is a surgical technique often used to treat vaginal vault prolapse, particularly in women who have had a hysterectomy. The procedure involves attaching the top of the vagina to the sacrum (the lower part of the spine) using a mesh graft, providing robust support and long-term results. Sacrocolpopexy is performed through an abdominal incision or laparoscopically, offering a minimally invasive option with a quicker recovery time.

Sacrospinous Fixation

Sacrospinous fixation is another surgical option for correcting vaginal vault prolapse. This procedure involves anchoring the vagina to the sacrospinous ligament, located in the pelvic region, to provide support and prevent further prolapse. Sacrospinous fixation can be performed through a vaginal incision, making it a less invasive option with a shorter recovery period.

I am so grateful to have had Dr. Lazare and his team perform my surgery, I required a pelvic floor repair consisting of Uterosacral Suspension, Cystocele, Rectocele, and an Enterocele Repair. In my opinion I was in the best hands. From the first consult, through the surgery and the follow up, he took his time, explaining the procedures, and/or options, and answered my questions.
