Hormonal imbalances can lead to a wide variety of physical and mental issues. When it comes to symptoms affecting your sexual health, like vaginal dryness, itching, painful intercourse, or reduced libido, hormone therapies can help restore both your physical and mental feelings of sensuality. Dr. Darren Lazare offers hormone therapy to those experiencing hormonal changes during menopause or other health reasons and is seeking a non-invasive solution.

What Is Hormone Therapy?

Hormone therapy, sometimes referred to as hormone replacement therapy, treats symptoms of menopause. When you go through menopause, your ovaries produce less of the hormone “estrogen,” leading to uncomfortable symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, pain during sex, low libido, mood swings, insomnia, and incontinence. Those who have had a hysterectomy may also experience these symptoms. Hormone therapy comes in many different forms, including pills, patches, gel, vaginal rings, vaginal creams, vaginal suppositories, and topical sprays.

Hormone Therapy Treatment

As you approach menopause, your ovaries begin to and, over time, produce less estrogen. This leads to the well-known symptoms of menopause that can affect your sexual and overall well-being. Those who have had an operation to remove their ovaries will experience what’s known as surgical menopause. This causes the same symptoms as natural menopause, but they come on much quicker. To mitigate these symptoms and restore your estrogen levels, certain hormone therapies can be used. How these treatments are administered will differ depending on the form of hormone therapy chosen by you and your provider. In each case, you will start with the lowest effective dose of estrogen and then adjust the dose as needed.

Who Is a Candidate for Hormone Therapy?

The ideal candidate for hormone therapy is any individual experiencing symptoms related to hormonal imbalances or changes, such as menopausal women suffering from hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, or mood swings. Additionally, women who have undergone surgical menopause due to an oophorectomy or a hysterectomy that removed their ovaries may benefit from hormone therapy to manage abrupt symptom onset and mitigate long-term health risks. Hormone therapy candidates may also include individuals with hormone-related conditions like endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or certain hormone-sensitive cancers.

Hormone Therapy Recovery

There is no recovery or downtime associated with hormone therapy. Rather, you will experience an adjustment period as you become accustomed to the effects of the hormones. Some women experience side effects like breast tenderness or mood swings at the beginning of their treatment, but these should go away on their own after a few months. Results of hormone therapy include increased vaginal lubrication, increased comfort during sex, higher quality orgasms, increased libido, reduction in hot flashes and night sweats, and improved sleep and mood.
